History
Hartwood Winery opened in the
spring of 1989 in the rural community of Hartwood, Virginia.
Hartwood is an area long known for its heavy deer population. Hart is
the old English word for deer, and according to local legend is the
basis of the area's name; and in turn the winery's logo.
Owner Jim Livingston started
building Hartwood Winery while still an educator with Prince William
County, Virginia. Jim has been involved with Virginia wine
since 1975. He established, with the help of family and
friends, the first Stafford County commercial vineyard in 1981 and
farm winery in 1989 Jim's wife Beverly, and their business partner
Dave Barber, join him in making the winery what is today.
Daniel Powell began working
in the vineyard as a teen, after riding his bike to the winery in
asking Jim if he could mow the grass. Daniel worked his way up
to become the Vineyard Manager, and after turning 21 became
Hartwood's Cellar Master.
Hartwood Winery's
award-winning wines are clear evidence of potential embodied in
Virginia wines in our rapidly maturing wine industry. Hartwood
Winery continues to build on its solid foundation by providing
excellent wines in a warm, friendly atmosphere for all to enjoy.
